Softball and baseball players need a wide array of accessories. Catcher's equipment includes helmets, gloves, head gear, face masks, leg guards, throat and chest protectors for youth and adult players. Today leading manufacturers using technology and bionic studies make catcher equipment stronger, more comfortable, and more functional.

The protective mask covers the head fully and also covers much of the throat. These masks are similar to the ones that players use in ice hockey and it covers the skull fully. These masks look like helmets and some come without the facemask. Besides this protective gear there is a throat protector. The throat protector is a hard plastic plate which is hung from the bottom of the catcher's mask in order to protect the throat. The impact of a striking ball could cave into the windpipe and sometimes it may be fatal, as well.

More over, catchers mitts are standard part of a catcher's equipment. Catchers usually use mitts with extra padding. Therefore, extra padding helps them to lower the impact of the ball. Only the catcher uses this mitt. However, the first baseman is also supposed to wear a mitt instead of a glove. This type of a mitt is longer and it's not as heavy as a catcher's mitt. One other type of equipment is the shin guard. Shine guards are designed to protect the knees and the legs from injuries. Shine guards are also called spike protectors. Many of the modern style shin guards also have a flap, which covers the top of the foot, as well.

Furthermore, very important for a catcher is a chest protector. This is equipment is padded with plastic foam, rubber or even gel. It protects the catcher's body from the impact if one tries and fails to catch a ball. New models of chest protectors extend to the shoulders in order to lesser the impact on the shoulders.
Furthermore, catchers wear cups under the uniforms in order to mitigate the risk, which could create a serious injury when a batted or thrown ball strikes catchers.

Then there is a knee saver. Knees savers are special pads filled with air and connected to the shin guards. In that way they are making a type of a cushion when the catcher is in the squatting position. Thus, they protect the knee ligaments, which during the time can get seriously hurt if they are not supported.

At last, catchers also wear the inner protective glove that is worn inside the mitt. In regard to that, protective glove helps in absorbing the impact shock of the pitched ball.
